Drama Editorial Review

**** The Criterion Collection's release of "Valley of the Dolls" on Blu-ray has brought renewed interest and appreciation for a film long maligned by critics. Initially released to harsh critiques branding it as "trashy" and "campy," this cult classic has found a loving audience who revel in its melodrama and vibrant performances. Viewers are particularly taken with the film’s engaging visual quality provided by the Blu-ray upgrade, noting the stunning widescreen picture and audiophile-quality sound that enhances the overall experience. Fans of the film praise the performances, especially by Patty Duke, whose intense portrayal resonates deeply with audiences—many noting it feels authentic and relatable, particularly in its depiction of addiction and rehabilitation. The film showcases a captivating ensemble, highlighted by the tragically short-lived talent of Sharon Tate, whose beauty and charm shine as bright as ever. Costuming by Travilla and the music score composed by a young John Williams receive particular commendation, underscoring the film's rich period aesthetic. Many reviewers express affection for the movie's campy moments and over-the-top dialogue, celebrating these elements as part of its charm rather than detracting from its value. Rather than being "the worst film of all time," as some might suggest, fans describe it as an entertaining experience that remains relevant, offering a glimpse into the Hollywood of the 1960s with its blend of glamour and grit. With its combination of nostalgia and unapologetic stylization, "Valley of the Dolls" has found a lasting place in the hearts of viewers, emerging from the shadows of its early critical reception to become a beloved piece of cinematic history. **
