Miral, a film by Julian Schnabel, is a serious attempt to shed light on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, primarily from the viewpoint of women. Despite receiving criticism from pro-Israeli groups, the film is an earnest portrayal of the intertwined lives of several women, culminating in the coming of age of Miral during the first Palestinian uprising. The film deals with difficult topics such as sexual abuse in a patriarchal Arab household and discord within the Palestinian liberation movement. The acting and art direction are top-notch, with Hiam Abbass particularly shining. Miral's sober and deadpan script may make it feel like a documentary to some, and while lacking the luminous brilliance of Schnabel's earlier films, this movie is a valuable contribution to a complex debate.
