Customer Questions & Answers
-
Question:
What is a Peavey Shingle Froe used for?
Answer: The Peavey Shingle Froe is primarily designed for splitting wood, specifically for creating shingles and other flat wooden elements. This tool features a sharp blade that allows for precise cutting along the grain of the wood, making it ideal for carpenters and builders who require custom-cut shingles. It's perfect for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts looking to craft shingles for roofing or siding projects. -
Question:
How does the blade size affect performance?
Answer: The 15-inch blade of the Peavey Shingle Froe strikes a balance between manageability and cutting power. A longer blade can offer more leverage, making it easier to split thicker boards, while a shorter blade allows for more control in detailed work. Thus, this size is excellent for various projects, offering versatility in handling both detailed tasks and larger splitting jobs. -
Question:
Is the handle comfortable for extended use?
Answer: Yes, the 18-inch handle of the Peavey Shingle Froe is designed for comfort and durability. It provides a solid grip that minimizes hand fatigue during prolonged use. This ergonomic design is important for professionals who spend a lot of time using tools, as it enhances overall performance and reduces the risk of strain from extended cutting tasks. -
Question:
Can this tool be used for other woodworking projects?
Answer: Absolutely! While the primary purpose of the Peavey Shingle Froe is to split wood for shingles, its versatility means it can be used for various woodworking tasks. Whether you're crafting furniture, creating slats for fences, or undertaking any wood-sizing project, this tool can perform flawlessly, making it a valuable addition to any woodworker’s toolbox. -
Question:
What type of wood is best suited for use with the Peavey Shingle Froe?
Answer: The Peavey Shingle Froe works best with softer woods like pine, cedar, and fir, as these types are easier to split and manipulate. However, it can also be used on harder woods provided the user applies the correct techniques. This adaptability allows woodworkers to take advantage of various wood types available for their projects. -
Question:
Are there any maintenance tips for the Peavey Shingle Froe?
Answer: Maintaining the Peavey Shingle Froe is essential for ensuring its longevity and effectiveness. Regularly check the blade for sharpness and sharpen it as needed since a sharp blade performs better and makes work easier. Also, keep the handle clean and free from moisture to prevent damage. Proper storage will ensure your tool remains in excellent working condition, ready for your next project. -
Question:
What safety precautions should be taken while using the Peavey Shingle Froe?
Answer: When using the Peavey Shingle Froe, it's crucial to prioritize safety by wearing protective gear such as gloves and safety goggles. Ensure that your workspace is clear and stable before starting and maintain a firm grip on the handle. It’s advisable to use the tool in a controlled manner to prevent accidents, particularly when splitting larger pieces of wood. -
Question:
What is the weight of the Peavey Shingle Froe?
Answer: The Peavey Shingle Froe's weight is designed for balance and efficiency, allowing for optimal control without being overly heavy. This thoughtful design facilitates ease of use, reducing fatigue during prolonged tasks. The weight makes it suitable for outdoor use, whether you're cutting wood on a job site or while working in a workshop. -

Peavey Knife Blades T-015-012-0FRO Editorial Review
The Peavey Shingle Froe with 15” Blade and 18” Handle is a machine made, solid piece of heavy-duty steel. The blade is .25 inches thick and can work well on cedar but has a steep grind that is not the most conducive for splitting. It comes without a sheath, but customers have made their own. The handle is graduated in size, so that the blade jam-fits in place, and is attached by a screw to prevent it from slipping out. The Peavey Shingle Froe is made by Woodcraft and is an excellent American-made tool. The handle, however, is prone to breakage, which occurred after 15 minutes of use in one instance.
