It all started in 1945 near Munich, Germany, when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident. To make walking easier during his healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole.
Using old rubber tires, he created soles that had air trapped within closed compartments, providing unrivaled comfort and support. Dr. Maertens shared his prototype with his friend, Dr.
Herbert Funck, and together they saw the potential to develop and produce these innovative shoes. The shoes not only solved the doctor's problem, but they also gained popularity in Germany. Realizing the global demand, the duo established a company to produce and distribute the shoes, which became known as Dr.
Martens. Initially, many manufacturers rejected the idea of an air-cushioned sole, considering it a short-lived gimmick. However, the R.
Griggs Group in Wollaston, England, recognized its potential and took a leap of faith to create the first work boot with this revolutionary sole. On April 1, 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was born, named 1460. To better resonate with the English market, the brand anglicized its name to Dr.
Martens. They branded the range as AirWair, which quickly became synonymous with quality and comfort. Today, the Dr.
